Conspicuous Gallantry Medal QV
Originally established in 1855 to reward naval gallantry in the Crimea. The original medals used the MSM with the words Meritorious Service removed and "Conspicuous Gallantry" engraved in their place.
Only 11 awards of this type were made and the medal fell into disuse.
It was revived for the Ashantee wars of 1874 and a new die was commissioned so the words Conspicuous Gallantry were now raised in the striking.
Originally the ribbon was three equal stripes of dark blue, white, dark blue but this was altered in 1921 to have a broad central white stripe with dark blue edges. Around 50 of this issue were awarded.
